I last visited her in 2010. I wanted Via to meet her and to see my mother’s hometown. Tita Luz was 96 then. It sort of just got stuck in my mind that she’s 96 and I would always refer to her as my “96-year old aunt.” So I was shocked to realize she’s now 99. She’s still active, putters around her house and is updated with the news. You wouldn’t know she’s 99.
She told me that she took care of my mother when my Mom was little because she’s 15 years older. When I was little, I spent my summer vacations with her in the province. Those were some of the best times in my childhood. I’m happy that she got to see Via. Three generations now.
I have always marveled at people who live to their 90s. What is the secret? I think it’s being able to let go of things that we cannot control. My aunt has always had a strong faith in God. She always set time for prayers everyday, morning and evening. I hope to emulate her faith and trust in God. Letting go and putting my trust in Him means letting go of stress and everything else that makes life difficult.
Hopefully, we will get to visit her again this summer.

That’s a great secret to share. Prayers. I always pray for my Mom’s long life, I miss my Lola who’s the sister of my grandma. My grandparents on both side died way before I was born.
My own lola died when I was 4. Her brother is father of this 99 year old aunt and he died at 99 from old age.

Still driving and living a healthy life. She said that she live a life letting all worries not to take her down. Because she knows that she don’t have control of all things whether up or down. My great-grandmother died at 101 in 2001. She was still strong but her heart was old. She frequently fell and had several seizures before she was hospitalized until she finally left us. We found out from the doctors that her heart beat was below the normal rate and the oxygen supply going to her brain was not enough.
This photo made me miss her coz we were also roommates for several years after my accident. Luckily her room was on the ground floor and she would willing massaged my legs despite her old age.

very good point to raise too! indeed letting go of things we can not have/handle and putting our trust in God is a sure way of living at peace…. and may even be the only secret to living a forever young and healthy life even after a century!!!

You know, despite her age that’s just one year short of a century, she has that glow on her face. Maaliwalas ba and looks like she doesn’t worry much. I’d like to be able to reach her age
She’s really remarkable. And you know what, she stays in her house all by herself with just a boarder helping with the meals. Of course a niece and her family leaves next door but she’s still very independent.
