Reading Recital

photo How_the_Grinch_Stole_Christmas_cover_zpsd8275c81.pngThe Twerp’s pre-k class will have a reading recital at school. She came home last week with a letter from school about the reading recital with the paragraph that she is supposed to read attached to it. Oh no! Via doesn’t really know how to read yet. She only knows the sounds to the letters but is not yet applying it so she can read. She does recognize a few words like her name, “free” for downloading ipad apps, and her classmates names.

The reading material is from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Her part is:

Every who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot.
But the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville did not!
The Grinch hated Christmas. The whole Christmas season!
Now please don’t ask why. No one quite know the reason.
It could be that his head wasn’t screwed on quite right.
It could be, perhaps, that is shoes were too tight.
But the most likely reason of all is that
His heart may be two sizes too small.

What to do? I can’t have her standing in front with a blank look because she can’t read it! I had her memorize it. She’s good in memorizing. Within 2 days she’s already memorized her part. It needs a little polish so it doesn’t look like she memorized it though. I hope it works!

Oh my! I think that’s a little too long for a pre K student to read. I know even my daughter in Kinder couldn’t really read that yet. Hope it went well.

  4. aby says:

good luck! i hope she knows how to read the soonest. hehe

  5. Vera says:

Ohh that’s a tough one! For sure the teachers should know which kids can’t read very well yet? Pero okay yung style mo, memorize muna. :)

Good luck. I know she can make it. Just keep on havign practice and let her remember not to be nervous inn front of the audience.

    • Jellybelly says:

Thanks! Audience is not a problem. Via is not shy and likes performing on stage :) I just hope she remembers her lines. :)

  9. Mylene says:

Hahaha… of course the teacher knows that your daughter can’t read yet. That is why you were given a copy of what she will suppose to read. And the words are not really for pre-k. I don’t know what is the purpose of this kind of activity? to deceive the audience? I think simple rhymes will do for kids.

You are right, little kids have a good memory. And this is the best way to save via from embarrassment during the reading recital.

  10. max says:

whoa…memorize those long lines just in 2 days? via is smart kid, and you did a good job too

  11. you did the right thing mommy, have her memorize her part..

  12. Aileen says:

Maybe they shouldn’t have called it a reading recital. Kids that age were only supposed to be able to read words or at the most, simple sentences. Sometimes, I don’t understand some teachers hehehe…

  13. Maan says:

I agree with Mylene. It’s not the right material from pre-K kids! But I know your Via will do great. Good luck!

  14. Oh this is an interesting part of the young student’s life! Am sure she’ll do fine. You’ve trained her well. :D

  15. Mom Michelle says:

I think kids memorize first before learning how to read and I think that’s effective. That’s what my son did when he was in K1. :-)

  16. I’m sure she will do just great! Don’t be too pressured, the most important thing for me is that she does her best and that her parents are there to support and cheer for her! Good luck! :)

  17. Marie says:

Mommy, how old is your child? Sana, they gave her something age-appropriate ano? but anyway, ask her na lang to memorize. I did the same thing with my son din. he cannot speak good Tagalog kasi (he knows english lang) so I asked him to memorize it by heart.

  18. Chan says:

Goodluck to you guys! Im sure your twerp will be just fine :)

  19. kat says:

I am sure she’ll do just fine. Good luck!

My daughter also has these activities. Did you ever notice how we can be so nervous about these while our kids are so cool about it?

  25. I know it would be a wonderful activity! We, parents, are always excited for activities for like this!

  26. Does she appreciate the Grinch’s story?

  29. Jhari says:

I love Dr. Seuss because all words rhyme and it’s fun to read it to our kids too.

  30. Olga says:

I’m sure she’ll pull it off just fine. But you may want to spend some extra time teaching her how to read. Kids are already expected to read and comprehend whole paragraphs before they even start first-grade. :)
